THE FOREIGN COUNTRY
Woke up this morning,
Scanned the headlines,
And realized I'd awakened
In a foreign country.

I hardly recognized it.
The ruling party abolished the seats
Of the opposition party
And sent police after the office holders.

Masked and armed men,
Concealing their identity,
Were raiding workplaces
And kidnapping workers.
**********
The economy was down,
Prices were up,
And those who said this
Were terminated.
**********
The social safety net was abolished,
As well as taxes on the rich.
The Emperor's powers had increased,
And we had an Emperor!
**********
I didn't recognize the country.
It wasn't the country it'd been yesterday.
It was a strange, fascist country.
And I hear pounding on my door.
